Bruce Hoffman and Marc Sageman, two of America’s leading theorists on terrorism and counterterrorism, held opposite views on how to deal with the Islamist terrorist threat, which erupted into a significant debate between the two in 2008. While Hoffman stressed that Al Qaeda is alive, resurgent and more dangerous than ever, Sageman argues that the threat no longer comes externally from organizations like Al Qaeda but rather from homegrown terrorists.
